Self-Photos

Black and White
This image was very entertaining to capture. The small dot in the sky was an airplane, that was a lucky chance for me I had wedged myself in the corner of my balcony and leaned out so that I appeared to be flying. It took a lot of core to hold myself up, but it was worth the image. I like to think of this image and the saying that you can do anything you believe, well I believe I can fly. Done.

Blowing bubbles!!! Actually they are giant christmas ornaments that we use to put in the city baskets that we decorate for the winter season. Sitting among the masses of balls was an interesting photo, but I wanted to make it different, so I pretended to blow the ball away. In black and white the flash appears on the ornaments and makes my jacket stand out. Bold and Original.

The World's Largest Hanging Basket. It is harder to see in black and white, but the lights that set the basket alight, match the color of my rain jacket. The yellows together accented the reds in my hair and my shirt underneath. In black and white you focus more on my look, down at the ground, and my hands holding on to the basket. It almost appears as if I'm afraid to let go, afraid to look down. Me personally I like to hold on to things, so the fact that this projected that without me knowing is a little bit stunning.

Multiple Exposures

I took a pensive image and overlaid the image of me "flying" onto my scarf. This made it appear as if I was dreaming of flying. My favorite part is just the detail I chose to leave of the tree on the back of my hand. I am imaginative and I like to think that I can imagine in great detail. So here is me, the dreamer.

My guardian self. In this image I chose to project my belief in my own thoughts. I aim to not care what society thinks about things I do or say, but rather listen to myself. Upraised looks and smiling on the inside. Looking after myself for a change. Spirit and self as one working together for one life.

Let's be the entertainers. In this image I projected myself hanging from a moss covered wall onto my jacket. My look is a little more mischievous in the background image so I overlaid the sillier image, trying to portray the other sides of me that people don't necessarily know, the fun in life. Or maybe the fact that I only get louder the longer you know me.

Sabattier

Peering around a pole. The texture of the pole and the difference between me and the pole two objects standing right next to each other. I liked the thought, that two objects can be so different and yet compliment each other and work together to bring one image together.

I really love this image in any aspect. As a Sabattier makes my face accented, my hair fades into the basket. My facial expression seems more, innocent, in a way with my eyelashes and lips standing out on my face outlined in the white. I love this image because it surprised me with an image of myself, inside.

Just sitting on the steps. I like this in sabattier because it makes the background mostly one color, the contrast of my coat, jeans, sleeve, shoes, and even my hair which accents the different colors with in it. It all just makes it pop a little more. Me in a world, it all comes down to me, what I do, who I want to be, and mostly what I do with the time given to me.

Portraits

These images are actually of Heather's mom. Heather's brother, John, swims on the same team I do so when I went to take pictures of 36 different people at a swim meet, Susan was ready. I went around and asked a variety of people to take their picture, she was working on our prize ribbons and had been doing so all weekend. I have known this exceptional woman for about 8 years now and she is always the nicest person, even when she's not smiling she has a hint of a smile.

This is my friend, Adam's, mother. She was running concessions at the swim meet, selling food to all of the starved swimmers at the meet. I wanted to take a picture of her because her face is so defined, it's softer. She had troubles not smiling and I finally just let her smile because more often than not that is what she does. Smiles.

This photo was completely accidental. Louise and I were just messing around between races I had finished my project and started taking random pictures of the swimmers. The goggle marks and her well, creepy, stare mixed with the blur of trying to catch the image when transferred to black and white turned out quite interesting.

Aaron is a funny guy, he has some of the most interesting faces. I couldn't stop trying to catch the variety of them, this one was as he was walking by I managed to snap one as we were walking, he is in focus but as we were walking everything else became blurred. Aaron provides the comic relief in swimming with his PSY impressions and cynical view on swimming. I was happy to catch one image that was solid because most of the time I was too busy laughing at him.

Eric, the oh so mature age group coach. Eric is a very tough love guy, when he is happy he is really fun to be around and his persistent teasing anybody can get used to. However, when it's a bad day for his swimmers, stay clear. Luckily I got to catch him first thing in the morning right after his coffee and pancakes (provided as a slight bribe by my brother). I told him not to smile and this is what I got. Pretty much Eric.

This is an image that I think portrays Jeanine's softer side. She is the Head coach, and she is in charge of all the older kids. I like her edited in the softer blue colors just because I think it is easier to see her age. Jeanine looks very young for her age, but I think in these images it's easier to see her exhaustion and effort she put into our team. Swimming is a sport that makes you grow up, swimmer take a lot of who they are from their coaches and races. It's unlike any other sport and the attention she gave every single one of us is unmeasurable. I think this shows exactly the toll losing so many seniors to college has left on her.

The Beauty in Ugliness

Beauty in photography is anything that speaks, tells a story or just makes you stop and think. It is all a perspective of the photographer, and the viewer. Beauty isn't necessarily "pretty".
Photographic Beauty is different than the "normal" beauty aspect per say, it is more of the texture, pieces, and introduction to the photograph. It's something that may be hard to catch with words, or even something the world is sheltered from, and doesn't want to see. Beauty can be seen when there is a story without words.
When people think of "ugly" I believe they picture something they wouldn't want to just sit and look at. Images of war, death, and pain can be very intense and moving and yes even beautiful. Images of insects, spiders especially can be gross or scary but as an image beautiful and unique. Even images of say scat, if you get close enough and an interesting angle that makes you focus on things other than what the image contains can end up being a beautiful picture.
An image of a scarred face, not the prettiest face, but the message of the Afghan women who are marked by their way of life, the boldness of the scar and the color of life surrounding it. It's a beautiful image in its own way.

Macro Photos

In the process of taking a macro photo, you must get close and upfront to your image. The pieces to this chess set are made of wood, but have taken years of beating, I wanted to capture their marks and nicks and the natural glow of the pieces.

Sometimes when you get really close to a subject you can't realize what it is, you instead see the detail and texture of the object. This is a couch pillow in my living room, the browns and golds you see are enhanced reflections of our light.

The juices of the sliced tomatoes create an interesting texture and glam. I was just looking for fun odd picutres to take because I didn't want to have the same basics like everyone else, I saw the difference between the white boul and then the inner and outer colors of the tomato structure along with the seeds. I went for the detail and cropped it so you could see the spread of shades.

When taking this picture I started with just the brown striped rock, wanting to catch the sediments and varried shades, but when I looked at them I couldn't quite make it pop as much as I wanted to, so I moved it onto a white counter top and placed another rock, one that is a more typical rock you expect, and focused on just the first rock. This made it so that there was more and forced the eye to focus on what is upfront rather than just see the image.

My sister's eyelashes are very delicate, they are light and fluttery. I wanted to just make a simple picture detailing her lashes and cheek. So I made it closer to a black and white.

A typical macro photo, this is a flower plant thing that we had on our kitchen table. It has such original blooms I had to get up and take a picture. The point was to get the fuzziness feeling through the lense and out to the viewer.

Food, this is a pistachio in it's shell. I placed it on a white piece of paper so that you could see the purples and green of the flesh of the nut surrounded by the shell that is a completley different color all together.

It's a raspberry. I focused in on the berry and moved the lighting hoping to catch the shadow and dark light contrast of the surfaces and background while continuing to keep the focus on the berry. Mission Accomplished.

It's a dirty shoe. A piece of life laying around hoping that it will have some importance in the world. I used a flash on this image so I could try to get the varied whites of the shoe to stand out.

My Grandfather clock went of and the tiny men came out and started to circle like they do on the hour. I photographed them at this point because I liked their detail and color with the lights.

Time. I wanted to capture time. So I took a picture of the hands on my clock and changed it to a grey black combo to make it more dramatic.

Coolest picture I have ever taken. A dirty handprint was left on my front window next to where we take our shoes off. It was dark outside and the light inside reflected just right so I could capture the print that was left.

In this particular picture I realized you can have a busy bright background, you can just focus on your subject, in this case a jeweled butterfly, and make those details stand out more.

The other sister also wanted a picture of her, since I took one of Abigial earlier so I took one of her watching TV, just so I could get the uplook and once again focus on the eye and the shadows around it.

Piano keys, the basic black and white contrast. Shadows and lights, I literally layed across the edge to get this one, I wanted to get a new angel.

This one is special because of the editing, it is actually a baisc shower scrubber what ever you want to call it. But after I got to changing the contrast and saturation it turned out really cool.
